About Your Hosts

Mike grew up in Loveland Ohio and I was born in Richmond Indiana.  I moved to Montgomery when I was a teenager and met Mike at the smoking lounge at Sycamore High School.  (Yes, in the late 70's and early 80's, kids could smoke at school in designated areas).    We were childhood sweethearts and got married a few years later.  We moved to central Florida in 1985 soon after our firstborn son arrived.

We moved to Tavares, Florida to help my brother run his trash company.  Since we've been in Florida we have raised or help raise 5 kids and we have 10 grandchildren.  Besides raising a family we have been involved in a number of small businesses and we also enjoyed serving in the community.  We have built churches in the US with Builder's For Christ and we were able to go on a few missions out of the country.  First to Peru with Off the Trails Mission and then to Haiti with Only a Servant Ministries and Harvest House Haiti.  We hope to again free ourselves up some to do the missions and service we love.

The River Inn is open to everyone regardless of your religion, race or sexuality.  We invite people of all walks of life to enjoy our home.  We would never want to be unkind or turn anyone away.  As we strive to show respect to others and embrace their differences we also feel it is important to be honest with who we are and what we believe.  We are Christians.

What It Means To Be A Christian

A Christian is someone who professes to believe in Christ. Not just that he was a teacher or a profit, but that He was God in the flesh; who came to earth to reconcile us to God. We believe in the bible. We believe that when Eve ate from the apple, sin entered the world, and since that time, all men, woman and children are born with a sin nature. This selfishness and sin separates us from the creator of the universe.

We believe that the punishment for this sin is death and hell for the unbeliever. The Bible says this and we believe it is so. Not that God wishes any would perish. He has made a way for us to everlasting life, a better life here and fellowship with Himself. The way is through Christ. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”

God loves the world he created, especially man. His desire has always been a love relationship with man. He cares deeply about me and about you. John 3:16 says that God so loved the world he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life. Christ also said, “when I go, I will prepare a place for you in heaven” also He said He would not leave us as orphans on earth but that the Holy Spirit would reside in Christians and comfort us, teach us and admonish us. (Sorry we are still not perfected as this is a lifelong process and we fail often.)

We also believe when we accept Christ’s free gift of salvation that we become children of God. The bible says we become “joint heirs” with Christ and that we are adopted as children. I hope you have had a child or felt the love of a parent enough to realize that our love for our kids is great but flawed. God loves us that much with perfect love! This is mind boggling to think the mastermind behind this awesome and great universe is willing to individually love and care for someone as small as you or me. Wow!

What is Grace?

Grace is a marvelous thing that many so called Christians don’t grasp. It is the belief that we are sinful. The Bible says all our righteousness (good works) are filthy rags. It means even when we try to do good, often our motives are self-seeking or just not as selfless as we think. It means that we have evil thoughts at times like judging others etc… Recognizing this about ourselves we could feel guilt, shame or condemnation. But because of Christ’s death on the cross, he took our shame and our punishment for our sin. We no longer have to feel awful. Instead, we admit our sin and agree with what God sees it as, ask for forgiveness and then accept that we’re forgiven. We stand before God as beloved children because of Christ’s death and resurrection. He is now sitting at the right hand of God and the Bible says he intercedes for us daily. Someday he will return and take us with him. The dead in Christ will also rise. I don’t claim to understand everything. I just accept his love and trust him to have it all figured out. I can rest in his love and grace. The Bible says his mercy is new every morning and his faithful is great!

What Does The Christian Life Look Like?

As a Christian, I came to Christ when I was 12 and knew very little about what that meant. I thought I had to begin being “good”. I was told to read my bible, pray, and go to church. So that is what I did. As I grew in Christ and studied the bible, I began to understand more and more. I began to pray for wisdom, which the Bible promises to all who ask. (This is Godly wisdom to understand life and the scripture) I have made many mistakes. Life has not always been easy. I thought if I followed God and was a good girl, I could avoid problems and my life would be easy. This is far from the truth. As I have matured, I realize life is hard but God is with me. He cares about me personally and what happens to me in life. He is continually showing up in unexpected ways and I am grateful. I can rest in my relationship with him because he loves me and that never changes no matter what I do or how I fail. Christianity isn’t a set of rules and regulations but a relationship with the creator and sustainer of the universe.

How Can You Become A Christian?

Just ask God for his salvation. Admit you are a sinner and without God you are bankrupt. Let God know you want him to be Lord of your life and help you. Believe that he will. It’s that easy. The Holy Spirit will lead you. Find a bible believing church that can help you as you grow in Christ. You will need to be around other believers who can teach you and support you. Remember God is faithful. If you place your faith in a teacher or person you will end up disappointed. Instead keep your eyes on Christ alone! Find a church you feel accepted in. Not because of who you are, but because you are Christ’s and He is in you working to renew you. Read the Bible and ask God to reveal the words to you and give you wisdom and understanding. The Bible says we have an adversary (enemy) who is Satan. He will attempt to take this new relationship away from you through doubt or other means. When this happens, the bible says to stand firm and resist the devil and he will leave you alone. This too is a life long process, as he will attempt to try different ways to isolate you from other believers or discourage your walk with Christ. That is why a good church family is important.

If this has helped you, please let me know. I will pray for you and rejoice!
