Ellie Schiller Homosassa State Park

This is a one of a kind wildlife park just off Fishbowl Drive.  To get the full experience, you can buy your ticket at the main entrance at 4150  S. Suncoast Blvd.  From there you will take either a boat or tram to the museum and wildlife park.  Once inside, you can enjoy a wide variety of natural wildlife.  The park features a unique underwater observatory where you can watch as they feed manatee.  When manatee are not around, you can also observe large fish.  Besides manatee, the park is home to many Florida animals including a black bear named Max.  They also have animals from around the world and are famous for the longest living hippopotamus named Lu.

The Homosassa River

The Homosassa River offers a variety of things to do and boating or kayaking is just the beginning.  The Homosassa River starts at the Homosassa Spring head and travels about 7.7 miles to the Gulf of Mexico.  You can see common bottle nose dolphins, West Indian Manatees, a variety of water birds,  both fresh and saltwater fish,  turtles and river otters.   There are many places to rent a boat or bring your own and dock it at The River Inn.      On the river you can enjoy swimming at the springs and snorkeling is great with the clear water.   Homosassa offers excellent fishing in both the river and the gulf.     The water starts salty and becomes fresh.   Most of the river is brackish water.  While you're out, don't forget to stop by Monkey Island.   This is a small island right off the bank in old Homosassa.  It is home to 3 unruly spider monkeys who were located there from the state park.  They are fed fruit daily by staff and have become a special part of Homosassa.
